Overview

Despite pervasive connectivity in most urban areas in the United States, the FCC estimates that millions of Americans across the country have no access to broadband services. USAC administers the $10 billion Universal Service Fund, which the FCC created to address serious gaps in needed coverage. We deliver funds through four programs (E-rate, Lifeline, Rural Healthcare and High Cost), to people and places who need it most – rural, hard-to-reach communities, low income households and schools and libraries who need access to facilitate learning. We seek an experienced professional to serve as a System Engineer III within our Infrastructure Operations team. The purpose of this position is to build and administer all information technology related infrastructure. This work would be completed within a group which manages all data centers The role requires the ability to work with Windows Server 2016 (older versions included), VMWare, and utilizing knowledge around EMC backup solutions and Avamar. Reporting to the Manager of Operations you will provide support on the aforementioned systems, and respond to outages within established SLAs.

Responsibilities

Working in a creative and fast-paced environment, the System Engineer III will need to provide expert knowledge in specialized technologies such as Window Active Directory and group policy, VMWare platforms, and general networking knowledge. Among others, your responsibilities will include the following:

 

  • Building new infrastructure Windows VMs, including design, planning, risk assessment, implementation, and documentation. Following procedures, change management best practices, and ensuring availability and maintenance of disaster recovery stance.  Projects will include those driven by Systems Operations, and those driven by other IT, and business groups.  Weekend and after hour On-Call support once a month or as needed
  • Maintaining VM and Windows Active Directory environments (primary responsibility) and EMC Avamar backup environment (secondary responsibility), managing product, establishing maintenance procedures, and working with Systems Administrators and other engineers to perform regular maintenance
  • Performing Infrastructure Monitoring with SolarWinds Orion (setting up and monitoring alerts, events, notifications and reports on server, network, and environmentals), and working with Systems Administrators to guide proactive monitoring
  • Responding to tier 3 service desk tickets, as well as production outages to SLA and procedure Ensuring that complex network, server and storage systems across the environments and colocations are designed to efficiently achieve a high level of availability, as defined by IT leadership, in relation to the specific services and business requirements
  • Researching technologies, testing infrastructure, and implementing security designs in support of USAC’s systems architecture
  • Providing internal and external audit responses
  • Creating and maintaining architectural documentation for VM and environments
  • Must be contactable on mobile phone. Will support monthly Friday - Saturday maintenance, On-Call rotation and several off-hours software deployments per month

 

About You

 

The successful candidate will excel at operating in a diverse and fluid environment, and will be crucial for providing specific system engineering expertise in order to push forward and complete the goals of the Information Systems team.

  • You have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in high-pressure situations
  • You have 8 or 9 years of experience completing similar duties as outlined above
  • You have 8 or more years of experience with Windows Active Directory
  • You have 5 or more years of experience with networking and virtualized environments
  • You have 2 or more years of experience with Avamar and system monitoring
  • You possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field or have equivalent related experience

 

The following skills are desired:

  • Network Security
  • EMC SAN and DR replication technologies
  • Sophisticated understanding of ports, protocols, and routing and switching in a firewalled, wide-area network
  • Xen/Citrix support
  • Virtual workstations
  • Scripting
  • NSX
