Despite pervasive connectivity in most urban areas in the United States, as of January 2015 the FCC estimated that nearly 55 million Americans across the country had no access to broadband services. USACadministers the $10 billion Universal Service Fund, which the FCC created to address serious gaps in needed coverage. We deliver funds through four programs (E-rate, Lifeline, Rural Healthcare and High Cost), to people and places who need it most – rural, hard-to-reach communities, low income households and schools and libraries who need access to facilitate learning. We seek an experienced, dynamic and collaborative professional to serve as a Staff Accountant within our Finance team to help support the Universal Service Fund (USF) accounting function at USAC. Reporting to the Supervisor of Accounting you will prepare periodic financial statements, analyze accounts, and provide management with financial research.

Working in a creative and fast-paced environment, the Staff Accountant will perform monthly General Ledger to subledger reconciliation, research and correct identified issues.   Among others, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Applying principles of accounting (GAAP) to everyday activities
  • Preparing weekly, monthly, and yearly reconciliations and reports
  • Assisting Manager and Senior Accountants with analysis of transactions
  • Preparing reports on financial results for use by Management and other users
  • Recording data using Microsoft Excel through data linking and use of pivot tables
  • Assisting Manager and Senior Accountants with daily, monthly, and yearly workflow and special projects
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reports for external and internal use
  • Communicating issues and procedures to colleagues and external parties in an effective manner
  • Liaising with IT team to help develop and test basic updates to accounting systems
  • Working with program managers to identify and correct anomalies in specific accounts
  • Other projects as assigned 

About You

The successful candidate will excel at operating in a diverse and fluid environment, and will be crucial for accurately tracking the Universal Service Fund.

  • You are passionate about our mission to help Americans gain access to essential communications technology
  • You are a problem solver with great attention to detail, can work with little supervision, multi-task, and learn quickly
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in high-pressure situations
  • You have 0 to 2 years of experience performing duties similar to those listed above
  • You are proficient in GAAP
  • You have expertise in the Microsoft Office Suite, especially development of pivot tables and data query functions with Excel
  • You have experience preparing and/or reconciling the accounting records of a financial reporting entity
  • You possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field (preferably Accounting)

The following experience is desired:

  • You have working knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning software, such as Microsoft Dynamics
  • You have working knowledge of database software, such as Microsoft Access
